Nowadays society is often described as a „security society“, or a „trans-nationalisation of statehood“ but also as a „knowledge society“ – during the last years, a huge number of time diagnoses have been developed which should meet the rapid social changes. These changes are summarized generally under the concept of globalization. Indeed, it seems that the historical transformation of capitalism is obvious since the breakdown of the so-called „Real-existing socialism“ concerning all social levels. The institutional forms of politics, work relationships, knowledge relations and also the way of the subject constitutions are drawn by determining changes.
At the same time, central signs of modern society like state, economy and ideology continue to exist. The form changes, but core functions have not changed. The social dynamics are subsumed mostly under the globalization process but are in large parts extremely contradictory. Thus, at the same time a new quality of social control walks along with flexible work relationships. The globalization of goods trafficing is accompanied by state bulk heading politics. Central institutions of knowledge-based capitalism show every now and then extremely selective accesses and the pluralization of lifestyles in a becoming more complicated and modern society is confronted with the taking of racist, anti-Semitic and religious fundamentalism. The social scientists have the task to put together the apparently contradicting trends within post-fordistic capitalism and to decode contradictions as immanent tensions if they do not want to abandon their analytic claim to contribute to the social self-clarification in favor of micro sociological problem description.
The critical theory in the tradition of the western Marxism provides for the handling of this task a number of important concepts and approaches which include the economy, the state as well as subject-theoretical and discourse-theoretical draughts and attempts. These answers are not be seen as more than partial answers. Rather, they offer a society-theoretically demanding perspective, which outlines a problem source that especially today needs the attention of the theoretical reflection, actualization and empiric examination. The institute of categorical analysis (Inkatan) wants to make in this sense a contribution to the theoretical advancement, discussion and widening of a critical analysis of the existing society and the contradictory development trends. Within this process the theoretical debate, which is intervening in emancipatory perspective, is not to be separated from the social practices.
Inkatan sees itself as a discussion, education and research connection, which works on different thematic main focuses. The different main focuses are not only getting connected by the problem diagnosis of a contradictory, global modern age, but also by a common perspective. We do not only understand central categories of capitalistic nationalization such as „actor“ and „structure” as external contrasts, but also as a condition relation whose contradictoriness and dynamism can only be understood as a historical-specific form of social relations. Rather capitalism as an analytical category must be understood as a complicated and historical-dynamic form of social bondage even though it is against an orthodoxy that is long cultivated in the materialist theory. This form is far from describing just one “economic manner”, whose structures are not opposing social contingency, but it is more a historically special and qualitatively social form, which is more immanent.
The Inkatan develops its own research and publication projects but in addition to that we are also available for lectures and discussions.
